MORE than 170 North Vancouverites crammed the Brooksbank elementary gymnasium to see 22 candidates debate affordable housing, secondary suites, and the Harry Jerome Centre Tuesday night.

Council candidate Juliana Buitenhuis, a counsellor with North Shore Crisis Services Society, discussed North Vancouver’s dilapidated recreation centre. “Harry Jerome is past its expiration date,” she said.

Delays dog North Vancouver rec centre rebuilds (North Shore News)

THE replacement of two aging rec centres in North Vancouver needs to be a top priority of any new councils, according to the outgoing chairman of the recreation commission.

Vincent Santacroce, chairman of the commission until his term ends Dec. 31, warned potential councillors that the issue can’t wait any longer. It’s already four years since the Facility Plan detailing the area’s replacement needs was released.

Rec commissioner urges action on needs

CITY of North Vancouver councillors are still at loggerheads over how to renew the Harry Jerome recreation centre after a long-serving North Vancouver recreation commissioner came to urge them to get a move on.

Wayne Robertson has served seven years on the commission, including a term as chairman. On Monday night, he reminded council of the various studies he had seen during that time.

William Griffin rec centre rebuild will be costly (North Shore News)

Pool costs concern NV district council

DISTRICT of North Vancouver councillors are worrying over financial constraints that could affect the William Griffin/ Delbrook Community recreation centre replacement project.

“This project will be limited by our financial parameters and our financial capacity,” said Coun. Robin Hicks, reminding attendees at the Sept. 12 council meeting of the current economic environment under which the centre will be built.
